Orthoconchoecia secernenda (Vavra, 1906) Records: 126 For many years this species was regarded as being a junior synonym of O. bispinosa, but Angel (1970) showed it to be a distinct species. All stages can be distinguished from O. bispinosa by size, having more pronounced shoulder vaults, and when living are more opaque and more intensely coloured. Since 1970, it has been reported many times from the Atlantic, and there are few records of it from the Indian Ocean. In the Pacific it is replaced by O. striola, a similar species readily distinguished by its strong sculpturing of longitudinal striae across the whole of the carapace. O secernendais a mesopelagic species that undertakes diel migrations into the wind-mixed layer and occasionally juveniles occur in the neuston.
