Metaconchoecia australis (Gooday, 1981)
Records: 45
Gooday (1981) described this species as a Conchoecia australis from old Discovery material from
the Southern Ocean when he substantially revised the 'skogsbergi' complex. Since then there have
been few studies in which the authors have attempted to discriminate this small species from the juveniles
of what are now classified as Metaconchoecia species. It appears to be a Southern Ocean endemic with a
circumpolar distribution. Its apparently disjunct distribution is probably an artifact, resulting from
its confusion with juveniles of M. skogsbergi. In their revision of the genus Metaconchoecia,
establishing a new tribe the Metaconchoeciinae, which they divide into ten genera, Chavtur and Angel
(in press) retain this species in the genus Metaconchoecia.
