Conchoecia magna Claus, 1874 Records: 412 (+ 41 records of C. aff. magna off Chile)
This is a mesopelagic species that is widespread throughout tropical and subtropical seas. However, over this extensive range it shows variations in shape and size that indicate that the present species concept may includes several cryptic taxa. Specimens from off Chile have been described as C. aff. magna and other forms have been reported from the North Pacific. Its occurrence in the Southern Ocean is restricted to north of the Subantarctic Front. Adults and final instar juveniles have been reported as undertaking diel vertical migrations.
